Restorations ("Fillings")

After a cavity is cleaned out of a tooth a filling must be placed to restore the tooth to normal form and function.  Two common "filling" materials we use are described below.

Amalgam has been used by dentists for many years because it is long lasting and affordable.  It is often a good choice in back teeth or areas that are difficult to keep dry during placement.  It can be placed quickly making it a good choice for children or special needs patients.  The silver color of amalgam may be visible when you speak or laugh.

Composite restorations can be placed in front or back teeth and are a good choice if you want a more natural look.  A composite filling may take more time to place as the tooth needs be kept very clean and dry.  Composites tend to be a larger investment than amalgam, and are not always covered by insurance.
