Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp (the tissue containing the nerve of the tooth) becomes infected.  Infection of the pulp can be due to multiple issues such as a deep cavity, a cracked or broken tooth, or injury to the tooth.  An infected tooth may or may not cause you pain.  During a root canal, the infected pulp tissue is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
